In 2006, I got my first break in the building industry with Porter Davis.
I’d applied as a joke and when I landed the job, I was so excited I crashed into my stepfather’s car on the way home.
For 8 years and 8 months, I lived and breathed Porter Davis.
I believed in their vision.
I loved their branding and product.
I also developed a deep understanding of land right across Melbourne, working with agents in the north, east, and west, and seeing how each pocket grew and changed.
Back then, $500,000 would get you a 50sq double-storey home on a 650m² block in the suburbs.
Today, I still carry huge respect for what that company taught me, and the opportunity they gave me.
Porter Davis may be gone, but it left a mark.
RIP to a builder that shaped an industry and so many careers — including mine.

In 2015, I joined Metricon — a business on a completely different scale.
I specialised in knockdown rebuilds and played a key role in training the next generation of sales consultants, many of whom still lead their teams today.
This was when my technical knowledge grew exponentially. I learned design, structure, engineering, and estimating.
For nearly eight years, I didn’t just sell homes — I designed them.
Walking through them during construction gave me an understanding no 2D sketch could ever provide.
Over time, I began to visualise outcomes before a hammer ever hit a nail.
Design became something I lived and breathed — not just a job, but a craft I cared deeply about.
I spent two years at Glenvill, a builder known for true architectural outcomes.
I worked on homes with basements, homes over 100 squares, and with clients who engaged architects for more than $100,000.
This was a new level of detail, of creativity, and of accountability.
Working side by side with architects, my confidence grew but I soon realised that what I’ve learned over my tenure is more powerful than any piece of paper.
Experience trumps education every time.
And architects don’t know price.
After more than 450 builds, I came to a realisation.
No matter how much I knew or how hard I worked, I was still just one piece of the puzzle.
As a consultant, you can guide people to make a better choice. But once they sign? The business takes over.
In the custom world, people would bring me plans drawn by an architect — and more often than not, it was clear the design was well beyond their budget.
Even when clients had specified what they could afford, it hadn’t been followed.
I lost count of how many times I had to break the news that the home they’d poured their hopes — and $40,000 in drawings — into wasn’t even close to affordable.
It was heartbreaking.
KPI’s more valued then customers, not always but more than enough times.
Time after time, I saw:
That’s when I knew it was time to step out. Not to sell.
But to protect.
I built New Home Guardians because I have a passion for construction, new homes, and helping people make informed decisions.
Over the years, I've learned that the best way to serve is by working for the client, not the builder.
The design knowledge, construction insight, and experience I've gained throughout my career now serve one purpose:
